I was given Boxer that was about 6 mos old. He’s now around 8-9 mos old and I’m having difficulty in obedience training. He was a stray that was handed down to me by 2 diff ppl. I already knew that Boxers can be stubburn and hard to train, but I’m a dedicated pet owner and am determined to break him of bad habits and turn him into an obedient companion.
“Rocky” stays out in the backyard until we come home from work. He’ll lay on the ground until ur within reach and then he springs up and jumps on u. He knows the basics, etc: “no”, “sit” (as well as the hand signal for sit), “stay”, “toy” and “drop-it”.
I want him to be protective of our house b/c our neighbor has had a break-in and we’ve had a car stolen.
Rocky snores so loud that one time when we came home he didn’t even hear us and I was the one who scared him instead of the other way around. He doesn’t bark unless he’s trying to play w/one of our cats, even when someone knocks at the door, he stays quite and just looks up and walks to the front. I wish he would be a little more aggressive/territorial….How do I go about instilling a guarding behavior in him?

I understand where you’re coming from….
You have to keep in mind that your puppy is still very young even though he is about 9 months. My puppy is almost 11 months old and she has been in this “rebellious teenage” stage since she was about 7 months. I had similar plans for my puppy as well- but realistically i don’t think it will happen until she is at least 2 years old. Reason being is that her breed traits say that when she turns 2- its like a light goes on telling her that she is an adult dog and her personality will change…she will become more protective and territorial. Also catahoula are known to be stubborn but are considered very smart…i believe boxers are very hyper and smart.
He will be more attentive as he gets older, and practice makes perfect. Here are some tips on training your dog to be a guard dog:
Guard and attack dogs: Dog breeds that are trained as guard and attack dogs need to be trained to not have full trust in strangers. Obviously this begins with teaching the dogs to not accept food or treats that are offered to them by any one else but the owner. They also learn to not pick anything up off of the ground, garden or area they are guarding since many times items or food can be poisoned. These are some of the things thieves use to get into people’s houses. Another important thing they need to learn is to be indifferent towards other dogs, especially if towards females that are in heat, since this could completely distract the dog from doing his job. Barking is important if the dog is inside the house, but if he is outside of the house he needs to approach the suspect quietly without barking in order to attack him by surprise so that the delinquent sets off running in panic. The dog is not supposed to follow the thief though; he needs to stay within his guardianship perimeter. A dog that barks while guarding outside can confuse the owner since the owner may not pay as much attention to it thinking that it could be a cat or some other dog. he jumps for your hands keep them down & it`ll be more of a bounce, If I grab my daughter my male grabs me, he`s 3yrs in December, I`ll raise my nose & sniff the air & he thinks someones there & he`ll bark, he`s my third generation & I have his mother to pic some key words like “who`s that & watch him” sneak around in front of him while your wife holds him, boxers are #1 in the world with kids so try the kid grabbing thing he should strictly go for you. fantastic dog & climbers.
