Question by femsidhe: Can cats have a cold?
I just took a kitten from my sister and I think it has a cold. It’s a young female cat, I think about 4 months old. She was covered in old flea wounds and then rolled in flea powder, she puffed powder when petted. She was also not fixed, forced to live outside in cold and rainy Washington, and my sister lives on a busy intersection. So I told her I was taking it because she obviously can’t care properly for a cat. My sister and I disagree on proper pet care because she’s an unlicensed dog breeder, she’s already bred her Toy Poodle twice and she isn’t even a year old yet. She keeps her breeders in a plastic kennel with very limited freedom and uses piddle pads instead of letting them outside. Now that I have the kitten she’s an indoor only cat with access to an attached greenhouse/ indoor pool/ conservatory, I got her an appointment to get spayed, spotted her with a monthly flea treatment, and got her tags. The only issue I still have with her is she keeps lightly wheezing and she sneezes boogers all over. My sister claims she has allergies, I’m thinking she either has a cold or the flea powder messed up her respiratory system. I first noticed it because she snores horribly, she only wheezes when she’s resting, otherwise she’s purring or pouncing on and wrestling with my daughter’s Chihuahua. She will be seeing the vet next week, I was just wondering if there was something I could do for her now to help her breath better.

Yes, cats get cold and upper respiratory infections. It can be fatal in very young kittens. It sounds like yours is maintaining fine, as long as she’s eating and drinking and has a good energy level. Unless you can get her appt move to a sooner date, there’s not much you can do in the meantime.

Question by Clare J: My cats tooth is sticking out HELP!!?
I am 13, only got him on friday. My parents brought him home for me from the humane society. I have realized that whe he is sleeping, his caning tooth is sticking out! He is 9 months old. Since my old cat died form cancer 2 months ago and the vet bill costed well ovr £1000. And its a hard time and all now because of the inflation and all that. The humane society does free vet treatment for you for 40 days after you adopt. Also when he breaths, he sort of makes a rumbling noise like he’s snoring. Does he need to go to the vet?? How can I tell them they need to go sooner rather than later when it gets worse!! I dont think he’s in any pain at all, he is extremily active, except for now…I have a break because he is asleep right now, but when he’s awake he’s like a toddler on speed!

Question by Mooshi: What is causing mucus discharge from cat’s nose, no appetite, weight loss?
13 yr old male Tabby housecat. End of May he sneezed – then his nasal passages got congested. He had a “crackling” sound when breathing and loud snorting/snoring noise. Vet put him on Amoxi drops – continued treatment until July. He had a senior wellness exam and geriatric panel run. Never ran fever and the blood panel results were very good for a cat his age He began having nasal mucus discharge from his nostrils and as he could not smell, his appetite greatly decreased. Vet prescribed Cyproheptadine (antihistamine) Amoxi drops had no good results, no appetite, mucus draining and clogging nostrals. Put him on Cefa drops- caused diarrhea.. Has anyone had similar problem?
What is diagnosis, is it curable or is this a chronic sinus condition in cats? I constantly clean the mucus from his nose with wet warm cloth to clear air passages so he can breathe and maybe smell enough to eat some food. Thank you for any response.

Question by Angel O: My cats have a stuffy nose what should I do?
I have taken them to the vet and she put them on 3 different antibiotics over the course of 3-4 months. They got better, (only making snoring type noses occasionally) so we the vet stopped treatment. Now their as bad as ever, and we can’t
afford to keep them on antibiotics forever! Help!

BTW they have no other symptoms, coats are shiny, they are energetic, eat well etc

Take it in the bathroom and run hot water so the steam will loosen it up.

Java Jackson, the caffeinated tuxedo, zonked out for a change. He’s usually bouncing off the walls! If you listen closely, you can hear Hodge snoring in a higher pitch in the backround. Both are rescued cats, one from the street, one from a hoarding situation. More photos of my rescues here: www.flickr.com
