Question by Luke: I am very concerned about a First Aid lesson I received today?
Can somebody answer two questions I have on First Aid (basic level).

1. The teacher said that if a patient has a suspected spinal, is unconscious but is breathing, we should roll them into the lateral position to make sure the airways isn’t clogged, even if there’s no blood or water involved (she says the tongue may be in the way). I told her it would be alot smarter to physically remove the tongue out of the way and not touch the patient on their back because otherwise they will be in a wheelchair the rest of their lives…apparently, I’m wrong!! Where’s the sense in this, people snore and choke on their tongues hundreds of times each night (they’re unconscious and breathing). I don’t understand why we should totally wreck someone’s chance of recovering from a spinal injury just to put them on their side.

2. She also said that if you arrive at your woprkplace (you’re the first and only one there) and you find the cleaner on the floor, unconscious (you know he’s fallen down) and not breathing, you should start doing DRABCD, and do a (quote) “couple of cycles of compressions and breaths” and then if nobody has arrived to assist you, call 000 (ambulance). Why the f*ck wouldn’t we call the ambulance in first instance? 9 times out of ten, first aiders are doing it wrong, or are inequipped to handle such things, and calling paramedics is paramount because they know what they’re doing.

Thanks.

i would totaly agree with you on the first 1. If their breathing, then surely that shows their airways is clear and as long as you can make sure their tongue doesnt block it, why risk doing more damage? that seems stupid.
and as for the second one i was told that you should call the ambulance first…at the time its up to you to do what seems most important at that time anyway so you make that choice i guess

I have a 10 month old Persian cat and I have recently noticed that heis snoring at night when he is asleep beside me. Should I take him to the vet? Could he have respiratory problems? Thanks!

I would – might be a respiratory problem but he might have a problem in his nose.
