Where can I take my sick cat for little to no cost in NYC?

Before I even start, I have read through all the other answers to questions like this…Unlike people on here who just up and got a cat while broke or something—I rescued him as a kitten, and have had him for 15 years, and he’s vocal, normally goes to the vet for his shots and is healthy and very happy. I have always had the money to take care of him, but have been unemployed for the past year. So please, don’t bother to answer things like “you shouldn’t own an animal if you can’t pay to take him to the vet”.please. I have had it for 15 years, I’m just unemployed…There is nothing I can do about that, and he is my life. If you are a vet and would consider trading my web and design skills for services, please let me know…references upon request!!!
For everyone actually willing to give me real answers—I need them! He has seasonal allergies, and I usually take him in for steroid treatments each season—which my vet in texas said was optional anyway, since they go away on their own and are just like ours, annoying but not awful– but this winter he has kept his sneeze, snotty nose, and snores…I think he has developed a sinus infection and needs antibiotics…The house is free of dust and such. I’m worried about him because it usually only lasts a week or two but this has been going on for almost 2 months. Yet he is active, chasing things, jumping, causing trouble as usual, but its lingered toooooooo long. His hairballs have either gotten worse or he has developed a cough, as well. Is there somewhere I can take him that is cheap or free in NYC? I haven’t found a good vet here, they all are so quick/snappy/uncaring with him… (don’t make me tell you about the ’special’ food I was to give him that gave him crystals…next vet said I should put him on HIS special food instead…you get the idea.) I won’t be able to pay rent if I take him to them to get him treated, and especially since the treatment was so half-assed since I moved here two years ago. Seriously, I am only getting enough to cover our food and rent right now. I am hoping there is some guidance out there for a down on her luck woman and her lifetime buddy.
please help.
thank you
