I have 2 male dogs. For the past year I have wanted a third, a little girl. I finally went to the pound and found just what I wanted. This was a Friday. She had been in the pound 1 day. The next day I woke up with a sore throat which turned into a hacking cough with chest and nasal congestion. Tuesday and Wed I could hardly sleep because I was up hacking. My youngest male sleeps in our bed, my oldest sleeps on the floor and my girl was sleeping in her crate the 1st few weeks.
Please don’t think I am crazy, I am a RN so I know this is going to sound nuts. Thurs morning my youngest male got up with a hacking cough. By evening I didn’t notice it. Fri morning it was back and I noticed he was snoring when he slept (which he doesn’t do normally). I took my girl to get spayed, and took my youngest male to the vet. The vet was rude and made me seem crazy for even insinuating he and I had the same thing. She sent me home with delta albaplex x 3 1 tab BID. My youngest male weighs 45 lbs, his dose should have been 2tabs BID, AND he should have only been on the dose with prednisone for 48hrs. With her dosing he should have had the incorrect dose x 10days.
My other 2 dogs were asymptomatic until I picked my girl up from the spay and neuter clinic. She had thick green mucous coming from both nares with a cough. I took her home and cleaned her nose with Q-tips. Her nose and mouth smelled like psudomonas. After I cleaned her the green discharge never returned. My vet was willing to give me the delta albaplex x3 for my other 2 dogs (my girl weighed 30lbs, my oldest male 75lbs) again half the correct dose. I told the people at the vet that the dose was wrong, they told me “you should just follow what the vet says.” So I followed the proper dose that I had researched and thus my dogs only recieved 5 days worth. Note my dogs never had vomiting, diarrhea, wheezing, and have had good appetite and drinking as normal.
When they finished the antibiotic the coughing was gone, my girl who was previously lethargic and calm was now hyper and playing. This was the following Weds. Thurs my friend brought her female over to play. By Fri night my dogs were sneezing, Sat morning their noses were dry, by Sun they were sneezing dark yellow mucous, by Mon (when I took my girl BACK to the vet) the mucous was brown tinged and thick. My friends dog was asymptomatice except for being “more calm and tired” than normal. However our lymphs under our jaws are enlarged.
I have done some research and it seems like some type of strep (maybe equi). I saw a different vet at the office and told him about what had happened, he didn’t refute what I said, but down played how sick my dogs were. I told him I did not want my dogs on any more steroids. He said “ya they’re only supposed to be on that for a few days any how.” He wrote for Doxycycline (the right doses) and Hydralizine for all 3 dogs. Of course as I left they were disinfecting the room and all the areas my girl had left mucous. I then started on Doxycycline too and 1 day later started expelling mucous from the respiratory tract and nasal passages.
My boys noses are wet again, my oldest is no longer sneezing, my youngest still sneezes some, but now my girl has a dry cough and her nose is still dry. They have been on antibiotics for 1 week now and have a few days left. I have researched zoonotic diseases and none of the s/s seem to be exact to ours. Whatever it is, it is contagious. My mother in laws dog has it (he sees a different vet and was put on Doxy) and my friends dog has it too. My friend is having the same malaise as my girl and her girl did in the begining. Maybe it is coincidence that my dogs and I became ill at the same time and have the same s/s, but this is bizzare. I am not asking for a diagnosis or treatment suggestions, just thoughts on what it might be? I swear I’m not crazy!
Just an FYI, I thought my dogs were better, they were asymptomatic when my friend brought her dog over. As for my mother in law I told her not to bring her dog that mine were sick, but she insisted because she had no one else to look after him. I am completely aware of resistant strains and that a virus cannot be cured with antibiotics. Also, I saw a different vet at the same clinic because I didn’t trust the other one. I work in an ER and have spoken with numerous doctors who seem to agree it is bacterial.

Canine Influenza. Not suppose to be contagious to humans but there is no hard evidence it isn’t.

They are very easy to train, not real guard dogs but they have a huge bark, but when they really need to protect you they will.
Most dont drool at all I have had a total of about 30 Boxers out of my life not one drooled.
But they do snore and they ARE REALLY GASSY dogs!

is there a remedy for my dogs snoring?

I have a 1 yr old beagle who snores. she used to sleep in the same room with me but it was so loud that i have to put her in another room at night which she hates. any suggestions for stopping or lessening her snoring?
