Go to the dr. Have a sleep study done.
You probably have sleep apnea. It’s easy to treat.
If you don’t do anything about it, it’s going to damage your heart.
A sleep study is something that your doctor will order if he thinks you might have sleep apnea, which is a disorder that causes you to stop breathing while you’re sleeping. You will spend the night at the facility in which they do the sleep study. They’ll hook you up to all sorts of monitors (on your head/chest) and will probably videotape it. It’ll record how many times you stop breathing and for how long.
To fix this problem (if it’s what you have), they’ll give you a mask and a machine that helps to force air into your lungs. It’s awkward at first, but you’ll get used to it and even like it (my husband often sits in bed with the mask on while watching TV).
Other things that might help: Often, people with this problem are overweight. If you lose some weight, often it’ll go away.

What could possibly be triggering me to snore at night? Could it be stress?

I read an answer on here saying that snoring is caused by vibrations in the soft pallate from the person not being able to breath through the nose properly or from having inflamed adenoids.
Well why does this not affect them when they are awake?

It depends on how deeply you sleep. I’ve actually woken up to my own snores a few times. YIKES!
