Question by Blue Rose: What is the BEST nasal strip or other product for severe sleep apnea?
Over the counter, nonprescription product please. Can not mix with Coumadin. I’m trying to find something other than the Breath Right strip for my husband before I put a pillow over his head. Even if I go to bed before him, his snoring wakes me up. I don’t want him to always sleep in another room. Thank you in advance for your suggestions.
-to use for now until he gets the CPAP machine….

Answer by RD True sleep apnea can NOT be corrected by nasal strips. If he truely has been diagnosed by a doctor for this, he needs to check into a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machine, which is used to correct OSA (obstructive sleep apnea). If he has a sleep study done in a sleep lab, most insurances pay for these machines if he qualifies. Only a doctor can prescribe. Sleep apnea can be serious, so it is worth checking into. Good luck.
In this edition of the Innovations in Facial Plastic Surgery Update, Plano facial plastic surgeon Dr. DJ Verret explains septoplasty surgery which can be used to treat snoring, difficulty breathing through the nose, and other problems. Septoplasty surgery is an outpatient procedure which can be reimbursed by insurance. Question by KNIKO: Can snoring be cured? Nasal strips, throat sprays don’t work?
is there a cure for snoring? I find myself snoring during winter month, perhaps because of the dryness due to heat. Is there any way to cure this habit. Would a humidifier really help? Is lack of humidity related to snoring. I tried nasal strips and throat sprays, but they do not seem to work

Answer by tracymoo2002 Depending on the cause, you might inquire about a C-PAP device from your doctor. This is a machine (prescribed by your doctor and usually covered by insurance) attached to a mask that you wear while you sleep. The machine has a air pump that gently keeps air flowing through the mask and into your nasal passages while you sleep, keeping open the glottis flap that causes snoring (apnia) when it closes.
If the basic cause of the apnia is being overweight, loosing weight WILL correct the problem This was the case with my husband — we were able to give the C-PAP back to the medical supply house after about 6 months. If the cause is a diviated septum or other nasal abnormality, your doctor may recommend surgery.
Godo luck and Happy Holidays!

Question by Whitestar: Dog with nasal congestion, snoring?
Probably food allergies are the cause. She’s seen a vet and taken antibiotics but still suffers. Any ideas or holistic treatments? Is saline spray safe, and if so, how is it administered?
Thanks in advance.

She’s a German Shepherd Dog.
I’ve been rotating her food to prevent further allergies. She’s better on Avoderm, which I’m cautiously rotating with Taste of the Wild. (I know-it’s Diamond but the ingredient list looks good.) She just developed a sudden, terrible reaction to Natural Balance Limited Ingredient Diet now even though there’s no grains. Maybe a meat? Quickly developed all the classic allergy signs: greater nasal congestion where she gets up because she can’t breathe well, chewing paws, I see some blood in her urine again, scratching face and ear infections. But she may be pregnant, so the meds? She just came off of her antibiotics. I keep giving her med after tincture after antibiotic after ear med…and she’s prone to false pregnancy so I can’t be sure and I feel guilty every time I give her meds, but…geez… : (

Answer by jclouporter What breed is your dog? Bull Dogs, Boxers, Pugs, Basset Hounds and Beagles all having snoring problems because of their snouts. The first 3 especially because, their snouts are very short, and its hard for them to get a normal amount of air. Don’t worry too much about this, unless you get annoyed with it. I find it quite humorous sometimes!
